School-based Prevention/Diversion

Rapport Youth & Family Services’ school-based Prevention/Diversion Program is provided in partnership with the Peel District School Board, Peel Regional Police, and various community agencies and resources. The program is intended to serve youth aged 12 - 17 years of age who are in conflict, or at risk of involvement, with the youth justice system.

Program Objectives

Improve targeted youths’ school engagement and attachment;

Reduce rates of targeted youths’ suspension and expulsion;

Reduce targeted youths’ charges resulting from school conflict;

Enhance targeted youths’ pro-social behaviours; including better conflict management skills and problem resolution skills;

Address behavioural issues of  young persons within a school setting; 

Increase support for learning for at-risk youth.

Program Features

  • Referrals are accepted from school personnel at Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School in Brampton and Peel Regional Police, for youth aged 12-17 years old, who are in conflict, or at risk of conflict, with the law.
  • The program employs 2.0 f.t.e Youth Workers experienced in working with “at-risk” youth in the community.
  • Services include, but are not limited to:

Peer mediation training for identified students at Harold Brathwaite S.S., and in the future to identified students at local associated feeder schools.

Peer mediation for targeted youth referred to the program.

Individual and group support services through program staff to help resolve issues of conflict and to promote/teach proactive alternatives to broaden problem solving/conflict resolution skills.

Linkage with other community services such as mental health, addiction counselling, recreational programming, and supportive housing.

Consultation to school personnel on youth related issues and challenges.

Collaboration with school personnel to promote targeted youths’ individual learning plans to promote school engagement and increase academic success.
