Mt. Kilimanjaro Climber Raises funds for rapport
In December 2008 Rapport volunteer Rosa Filipe journeyed to Tanzania, East Africa to ascend Mt. Kilimanjaro. Here is her story.
The hike wasn't very difficult. But the hiking was the hardest thing I've ever done. I kept thinking "Just one more step..."
When my partner and I decided to hike Kilimanjaro, neither one of us knew exactly what we were getting into, and I think I'm glad we did it that way. A 6 day journey from bottom to peak and back again, we had no idea the challenge that it would be. A true story of persistance for the many people of the world who have summitted "Kili", it was one of the most beautiful but difficult things I've ever done.
While planning for the trip it occurred to me that I was getting a lot of attention for the feat, and that this could be a great opportunity to direct that attention towards something good, possibly even raise some money. Rapport Youth & Family Services was one of the first places that came to mind. I believe in what they offer, stand behind the committment that they have made to the community.
After four short weeks of persistant fundraising efforts and even a small concert, I was able to donate $1,500 to Rapport!
Gasping for air, hiking for hours in minus 15 degrees temperature, 15 minutes at the peak, and then heading right back down again: it was well worth it for being able to help bring awareness and support to Rapport Youth & Family Services.
